This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Cognitive Dysfunction in non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Patients Treated with Front-Line Chemotherapy
DownloadSpring 2015
Despite the research to date, the characteristics and impact of cognitive dysfunction (CD) in cancer patients following chemotherapy is still not well understood. It is estimated approximately 20% of patients will manifest measurable cognitive deficits on neuropsychological testing...

Fall 2015
There is a concern that brain tumours are underreported in the Alberta Cancer Registry (ACR), yet no studies have been performed to investigate this issue. This study addresses the concern of underreporting of brain tumours in the ACR by assessing case ascertainment of primary brain tumours cases...

Comparison of tooth loss between intensity modulated and non-intensity modulated radiotherapy in head and neck cancer patients
DownloadFall 2011
Advanced radiotherapy (RT) systems (intensity modulated radiotherapy, IMRT) is widely used to treat head and neck cancer. A combination of radiation and chemotherapy potentially increases toxicity as well as dental complications. Tooth loss was retrospectively assessed using oral cavity,...
-
Fall 2009
The analysis of wide-angle cellular light scattering patterns is a challenging problem. Small changes to the organization, orientation, shape, and optical properties of scatterers and scattering populations can significantly alter their complex two-dimensional scattering signatures. Because of...

Deciphering the mechanism(s) which limit reovirus spread in resistant lung and HNSCC cancer cells
DownloadFall 2016
Reovirus is a naturally benign virus that preferentially replicates in transformed cells and is currently undergoing clinical trials as a promising oncolytic therapy. In normal mouse fibroblasts, transformation by constitutively activated Ras oncogene is sufficient to promote reovirus infection....

Delivery of STAT3 inhibitor cucurbitacins to tumor by polymeric nano-carriers : Implications in cancer chemo- and immunotherapy
DownloadFall 2009
Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (STAT3), a common oncogenic mediator, is constitutively activated in many types of human cancers and plays a critical role in tumor growth and cancer immune evasion. The focus of this dissertation is the delivery of STAT3 inhibitor cucurbitacins...

Fall 2013
The aim of this work is to develop an effective non-viral carrier and to identify suitable gene targets that would induce apoptosis specifically in lymphoma cells upon down-regulation with short interfering RNA (siRNA). Lymphoma is common in children and young adults, and although survival rate...
-
Development of block copolymer based nanocarriers for the solubilization and delivery of valspodar
DownloadFall 2011
One of the major causes of failure in cancer chemotherapy is multidrug resistance (MDR), where cancer cells become resistant to different types of anticancer drugs. Over-expression of membrane efflux pumps like P-glycoprotein (P-gp), which recognizes different chemotherapeutic agents and...

Development of Genetic Medicines for the Treatment and Prevention of Infectious Disease, Cancer, and Aging
DownloadSpring 2022
Gene therapy has potential to become the Holy Grail of modern medicine, however, its clinical success has been hindered due to the lack of a safe and effective nucleic acid delivery platform. The recent success of non-viral RNA delivery platforms has revitalized the field and spurred great...

Development of Novel Polymeric Micellar DACHPt for Enhanced Platinum Based Chemotherapy in Colorectal Cancer
DownloadSpring 2019
One of the major limitations of chemotherapy in cancer treatment is the side effects of anti-cancer drugs. This happens due to non-selective distribution of most standard chemotherapies, and their action on cancer and all normal dividing cells. The objective of this project is to develop a novel...
