Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Spring 2011
This study was part of the development of an ice jam flood forecasting system for Hay River, NWT. 2-D numerical models were used to simulate ice processes in an effort to predict ice jam formation. A summer survey was conducted to finalize the bathymetry of the Hay River Delta. Observations were...

Fall 2014
The need for increasingly high resolution 3D models and the cost in processing high resolution polygonal meshes have made 3D point clouds an alternative for many researchers in recent years. Considerable research has been devoted to various areas of point clouds. This thesis presents three...

References to the internet as physical space are pervasive: go forward, go back, domain name, email address, enter, password, website, portal, homepage, login, logout, logon, logoff, Myspace, information superhighway.… On the internet we surf from website to website, each with its own address....

A NEW APPROACH TO MODEL FRICTION LOSSES IN THE WATER-ASSISTED PIPELINE TRANSPORTATION OF HEAVY OIL AND BITUMEN
DownloadSpring 2016
Water lubricated pipe flow technology is an economic alternative for the long distance transportation of viscous oils like heavy oil and bitumen. The lubricated flow regime involves an oil-rich core surrounded by a turbulent water annulus. Energy consumption associated with this type of pipeline...

A Robust Model for Integration of Sand-Arch Stability and Fractal Wormhole Network in CHOPS and post-CHOPS Process Simulation
DownloadSpring 2024
Cold heavy-oil production with sand (CHOPS) is a primary recovery process in unconsolidated heavy-oil reservoirs. The recovery factor typically ranges from 5% to 15% of the initial oil in place (OOIP). Approximately 90% of crude oil is left underground with considerable exploitation potential...

Accounting for non-stationarity via hyper-dimensional translation of the domain in geostatistical modeling
DownloadFall 2009
Medium and short term mine planning require models of mineral deposits that account for internal geological structures that permit scheduling of mine production at a weekly and monthly production periods. Modified kriging estimation techniques are used for accounting for such geologic structures....

Fall 2010
A robotically-controlled actuation system has been developed and built to perform active open-loop flow control experiments on transitional and turbulent backward-facing step flows in water. Control of the reattaching shear layer used hydraulic suction-and-blowing actuation emanating from 128...

An Interactive 3D Visualization Tool to Analyze the Functionality of Convolutional Neural Networks
DownloadFall 2022
Convolutional Neural Networks have outperformed traditional image processing approaches for many image classification tasks. However, despite achieving high classification accuracy on multiple datasets, these machine learning approaches are not transparent and act more like a black box. For this...

Spring 2016
The Smart-Condo™ project investigates how technology can be used to unobtrusively observe and support seniors to live independently in their homes longer. Sensors embedded in the environment react to the people’s daily-living activities and the recorded readings are analyzed to recognize these...

Spring 2013
Global kinetic model for a Pt-Pd diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) is proposed and validated. Experimental data was obtained using different concentrations of the artificial gas mixtures which were passed over a bimetallic catalyst. Previous works of Voltz [1], Pandya [2], Sola [3] and many others...
