SSHRC PG awarded 2018: Although 99% of human history has been lived as foragers, little is known about the contributions and experiences of individuals in hunter-gatherer groups and their role in long-term patterns of culture diversity, change, stability and resilience. We will examine these vital aspects of our history through two case studies: the Baikal region in Siberia (8300--3500 years ago) and Karelia in European Russia (8700--8000 ago). In both areas the human skeletal collections are of unique scholarly importance and offer excellent scope for our research. Our goals are to: Develop detailed reconstructions of individual life histories based on comprehensive examination of human skeletal remains; Build high-resolution chronologies using systematic radiocarbon dating of all examined human remains; Synthesize the life histories and chronologies within the context of the natural environment. The new knowledge will fundamentally improve the current understandings of how Holocene hunter-gatherers responded with both fragility and resilience to various cultural and environmental pressures in regions that are important from Canadian, North American and global perspectives.
