Occupational Safety and Workers' Rights among New Working Age Immigrants: The Role of Settlement Organizations

  • Author(s) / Creator(s)
  • SSHRC Awarded PDG 2020: New immigrants (those in Canada for less than 10 years) are over-represented in jobs and workplaces that are hazardous to their health and safety, placing them at high risk for occupational injuries. Many new immigrant workers in precarious employment have little understanding of occupational safety (OS), related legislation, and workers' rights (WR) in Canada. They also underreport injuries because of the financial insecurity associated with precarious employment, discrimination, racism, and feelings of powerlessness. However, OS and WR training are currently seldom provided to this population. There is a lack of understanding of how to empower them to exercise their rights to safety in the workplace. To address the gaps, this project aims to: (1) build the capacity of immigrant serving agencies to provide OS and WR training to new immigrant workers and (2) strengthen the capacity of new immigrant workers to exercise their rights to safe work practices. Results of this project will create an OS and WR training procedure tailored to the needs of this population, build partnerships to deliver training, and establish a sustainable resource hub for immigrant communities.
