The book provides an introduction to Athabasca oil sands describing their reserves and bitumen recovery methods. A summary of interfacial science is provided with analysis of interfacial interactions relevant to the understanding of bitumen recovery in an aqueous environment. Physical and chemical properties of oil sands components are provided. In-depth analysis of fluid – particle dynamics is provided to better understand the operation of separation vessels and lump digestion in hydrotransport pipelines. Principles of bitumen flotation, fundamental aspects of paraffinic and naphtha-based froth treatment processes, and formation and stability of water-in-oil emulsions are discussed. Role of colloidal science in tailings management is elucidated.
