Biting off as much (or maybe more) than you can chew: Insights form managing the an OER project from Opening Up Copyright

  • Author(s) / Creator(s)
  • The University of Alberta is developing an open educational resource series on copyright (Opening Up Copyright Instructional Modules) that aims to develop and enhance copyright literacy in Canada. While the project is supported by a diverse number of individuals and offices on campus and has grant funding, the scope and size of the endeavour creates its own set of challenges. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the module series and a discussion of how various challenges have been addressed. Specifically, the development of a 16 stage workflow used to facilitate the module development and revision process, the creation of a visual glossary to enhance consistency and visual design challenges, and openly available community pages that help balance the need to engage with copyright and OER communities with the constraints of the project team’s resources will all be highlighted. The goal of the presentation is to ensure that participants leave with an appreciation of some of the challenges inherent in large-scale OER projects and an awareness of potential solutions to address issues of coordination, collaboration and design.
