SSHRC CG awarded 2024: The purpose of this project is to develop a free online learning module for established and emerging professionals (i.e., scholars, students, practitioners, and policymakers) working in recreation, sport, physical activity, leisure, and other movement cultures. Based on research from the book titled "Fit to be Canadian? The Recreation Industrial Complex in Canada," the module will include 16 interrelated lessons. Collectively, these lessons will provide a re-reading of recreation/sport history by demonstrating how Indigenous genocide, racist immigration policy, and eugenic social programs) have shaped, and continue to shape, our recreation and sporting environments (e.g., playgrounds, swimming pools, urban parks, municipal recreation/sport centres). The module will be developed in partnership with the InMotion Network, an Albertan non-profit organization, to act as a starting point for creating more just, equitable, and meaningful opportunities.
