Crossing borders, breaking rules: Carol Shields, subversive feminist

  • Author(s) / Creator(s)
  • SSHRC IG funded 2020: This study of Carol Shields' oeuvre has three aims: to explore her achievement in challenging nonfiction genres; to explore how this work influenced her novels; and to explore how this work rendered her fiction increasingly feminist and postmodernist. Methods include researching Shields' archives, comparing and annotating drafts; interviewing her agents, editors and family members; exploring her evolving revision of each genre; and reviewing her many interviews and the rich store of critical studies of her oeuvre. Research output goals will include: 1] a monograph on her entire oeuvre wherein I will trace the evolution of her feminist revision of literary genre. "Sparkling Subversion: Carol Shields' Vision and Voice" will examine her twenty-four books (ten novels, three poetry collections, three story collections, four plays, two critical biographies, two editions) and essays; 2] a new edited edition of "My Miniature Art" (the first complete collection of her poetry, including unpublished archived poems), with an introduction and annotations; 3] a re-edit of "Fresh News from Another Country," a collection of unpublished essays on genre and gender, with an introduction and annotations; 4] a final output will be a collection of papers by Canadian scholars showing how Shields' essays illuminate her fiction. These editions will contribute to the chapters of my monograph on poetry and essays. My experience editing eight texts thus far will help me train student assistants. These products will contribute to our understanding of genre and Shields's achievement in fiction and nonfiction, revising poetry, drama, novels, stories, essays and biography. They will assist Canadian literature specialists and benefit feminists and students of genre and gender, literary theory, women's studies and sociology, plus social and government policy on women.
