Creating Climate Equity in Camrose: Camrose Climate Outreach Information Network (C-COIN)

  • Author(s) / Creator(s)
  • To develop an understanding of the largest climate vulnerabilities and risks that could impact the citizens of Camrose, the City of Camrose completed a Climate Vulnerability and Risk Assessment (CVRA) with funding from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre in 2022. The CVRA identified specific actions that the City of Camrose should begin to implement to address and manage these high-priority climate change risks affecting the local economy and community. Over the past 14 weeks, our team from AUIDS 301 with Dr. Greg King worked directly with the City of Camrose’s Department of Community Development to develop a communication framework (demonstrated through a detailed index and a visual roadmap) designed to improve the dissemination of climate change risk information related to extreme weather events in Camrose, with a focus on prominent, local vulnerable populations (seniors and older adults, children, low-income persons, persons with disabilities, and persons with chronic medical conditions). Addressing Community and Local Economy Action 5 of the Camrose Climate Vulnerability and Risk Assessment, the framework aims to enhance communication between the City and organizations serving vulnerable demographics by identifying primary points of contact for distributing climate policy and risk/response information. The proposed framework facilitates the dissemination of climate response and risk information to relevant human services organizations, primarily through Interagency. This approach streamlines communication, enabling effective responses to climate events within vulnerable populations. By establishing a centralized network, the framework addresses the absence of formal climatic response communication procedures and strengthens resilience to climate change among vulnerable groups.
