This is a translation of twenty short passages from "Nihon Shoki", commonly known as "The Chronicle of Japan" or "The Chronicles of Japan", from the original classical Chinese into English. Nihon Shoki, completed in 720 CE, is the first official national history of Japan compiled under the auspices of the emperors and empresses during the late 7th century and the early 8th century. Passages selected include the beginning of the universe (called heaven-and-earth), the birth of the Sun Goddess, the eastern expedition of Emperor Jinmu, the coming of the Chinese classics and Buddhism to Japan, and the exchange of diplomatic missions between Japan and China in the early 7th century. With parallel original text, notes and index. Extent: 57 pages.
