Images of Research Competition 2024

In 2024, University of Alberta graduate students made 77 submissions to the Images of Research Competition. The submissions illustrated that graduate student research at U of A spans diverse contexts and disciplines, showcasing how knowledge translation bridges diverse fields of study and broadens our understanding. Students' work exemplified their ingenuity and depth by exploring the intricacies of cultural identities, the social isolation of persevering graduate students, new paleontological finds, and the challenges of paternal postpartum depression, to name only a few. Further, they underscored the creative talent of U of A graduate students in producing images that capture the essence of their research. A multi-disciplinary five-person adjudication committee reviewed all submissions and selected winners. Additionally, the community voted for the People's Choice Award, and the winning image garnered 217 out of 2223 votes. The winning and semifinalist images from the Images of Research exhibition are now available in ERA, the University of Alberta’s digital repository.

    Noton, Emily

My socio-cultural research on women and ballet draws from Michel Foucault’s post-structuralist theories about power, identity and the self. I examine the experiences and opportunities that women have to continue dancing past the age of 18, as they navigate the often fraught transition to...

Friction Stir Welding is a unique process that joins metal plates in a dance of creation. Through the rotation of the main tool composed of the pin and the shoulder, it stirs two metal pieces together. This technique forges a bond without melting the base materials, making FSW a cold state...

"Mirror of Identity" is a heartfelt portrayal of an elderly woman’s life told through her hands. These hands, with their deep wrinkles and fine jewelry, belong to my grandmother’s dearest friend. She was forced into marriage for the sake of wealth, not love. The creases in her skin narrate her...

At a glance, this image is a snapshot of scientific discovery—a researcher holding a lichen. Look closer, and it transforms into a tapestry of petri dishes, each containing unique life forms, living together in a delicate balance, all derived from a single lichen. This piece is my ode to the...

This photo represents the vulnerability of the bovine calf at birth. This calf was born moments ago, and its dam stands protectively in the background, even though she has yet to provide immune protection to her calf. Humans are born with immune protection from their mom in the form of maternal...

A palimpsest names the way that stories about land can be both absent and present—layers of histories both preserved and forgotten in collective memory yet remain enmeshed with each other. A palimpsest, in simultaneously preserving and erasing that which was there before, can complicate or...

This image portrays a new father holding his daughter within the first 24 hours of her life. The father supports the delicate newborn for the first time in an awkward, protective cradle, with mixed emotions of love, fear, hope, and possible uncertainty. This child is helpless and relies on the...

This image captures a moment during a qualitative interview of a young man, a user of advanced lower-limb prosthesis, as he shares his narrative sitting in an empty sports arena. He is pensive, perhaps reflecting on the life he lived before or a life he has chosen now. As he narrates, a...
