Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Associative classification, linguistic entity relationship extraction, and description-logic representation of biomedical knowledge applied to MEDLINE
DownloadFall 2009
MEDLINE, a large and constantly increasing collection of biomedical article references, has been the source of numerous investigations related to textual information retrieval and knowledge capture, including article categorization, bibliometric analysis, semantic query answering, and biological...

Associative plasticity and afferent regulation of corticospinal excitability in uninjured individuals and after incomplete spinal cord injury
DownloadFall 2009
Cortical representations are plastic and are allocated based on the proportional use or disuse of a pathway. A steady stream of sensory input maintains the integrity of cortical networks; while in contrast, alterations in afferent activation promote sensorimotor reorganization. After an...

Spring 2019
Inspired by nature, structured interfaces have been shown to enhance adhesion by trapping crack propagation along the interface. To propagate the trapped crack, more energy input is required externally and therefore the effective fracture toughness is increased. In many applications, directional...

Asymmetric Driver Behaviour-Based Algorithms for Estimating Real-Time Freeway Operational Capacity
DownloadFall 2013
To mitigate recurrent and non-recurrent congestion, and to make full use of limited roadway capacity, numerous Active Traffic Demand Management (ATDM) strategies have been proposed, developed and implemented. Segment capacity, a basic input of ATDM predictive models, has been commonly considered...

Spring 2021
A thorough overview of esters and their reductions is presented. A large focus was placed on reductions via homogeneous catalytic hydrogenation. Although several ester hydrogenation systems have been developed, the production of highly enantioenriched alcohols has generally relied upon the usage...

Asymmetric Synthesis of Carbocycles by Intramolecular Conjugate Displacement & Synthetic Studies on Sorbicillactone A
DownloadSpring 2014
The first chapter of this thesis describes an intramolecular conjugate displacement (ICD) for the asymmetric synthesis of carbocycles using a carbon nucleophile. The precursors for ICD were synthesized by Morita-Baylis-Hillman reaction between (5R)-5-(l-menthyloxy)-2(5H)-furanone and aldehydes,...
