This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Detailed examination of iron meteorites and impact generated carbonaceous spherules associated with the Whitecourt Meteorite Impact Crater, Alberta, Canada
DownloadSpring 2014
The impact of an iron meteorite <1100 years ago near Whitecourt, Alberta, Canada formed a crater 36 m in diameter. The impacting body fragmented upon impact, scattering thousands of shrapnel-shaped fragments around the crater. Internal examination of the fragments reveal that the mineralogy is...

Fall 2016
The main purpose of this study was creating a finite element model with bio-realistic geometry of ligaments in the cervical spine region. A ligamentous finite element model was created that allows the study of the stress distribution on ligaments under six different moments: flexion, extension,...

Detailed Study of Atomic Silicon Dangling Bond Charge State Dynamics on the Surface of Hydrogen Terminated Silicon (100)–2 × 1
DownloadFall 2015
Atomic Silicon Dangling Bonds (DBs), which are natural quantum dots, are sites where silicon atoms on a hydrogen-terminated silicon surface have no bound hydrogen atom (leaving an un-reacted sp3 hybrid orbital). These DBs hold the promise of new ultra-low power devices based on the Quantum...

Detecting and correcting typing errors in open-domain knowledge graphs using semantic representation of entities
DownloadFall 2019
Large and accurate Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are often used as a source of structured knowledge in many natural language processing (NLP) tasks, including question-answering systems, conversational agents, information integration, named entity recognition, document ranking, among others. Various...

Detecting And Diagnosing Web Application Performance Degradation In Real-Time At The Method Call Level
DownloadSpring 2012
As e-commerce becomes more popular, the performance of enterprise web applications becomes an important and challenging issue. Unlike failures, performance degradation is more difficult for the administrator to observe. It also takes much time to locate the root cause because there are many...

Spring 2020
Several Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques such as machine learning, evolutionary computing, and Artificial Life (A-life) have been increasingly used to generate emergence of novel behaviours in multi-agent simulations (e.g., commercial games). However, automatically detecting emergent...

DETECTING CEREBRAL DEGENERATION IN ALS USING A MULTICENTRE APPLICATION OF 3D TEXTURE ANALYSIS
DownloadFall 2018
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a highly heterogeneous disease in terms of its clinical presentation, progression, and detected pathology in the body. It is a multi-system degenerative disorder, though a diagnosis is made based on the presence of both upper motor neuron (UMN) and lower...

Spring 2019
When a machine or a component of a machine fails, corrective maintenance is performed to identify the cause of failure and decide on a repair mechanism to restore the machine to its normal working condition. However, because the machine has failed without any prior warning, a considerable amount...
