This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2015
This thesis focuses on developing a high power, compact source of Terahertz (THz) radiation. An amplifier and an oscillator are designed using an active device exhibiting the Gunn Effect. The amplification properties of the amplifier and oscillator are first studied using the commercial software...

Spring 2024
THz optics and scanning probe microscopy (SPM) techniques have gone through several decades of development, enabling numerous research studies and applications related to ultrafast phenomena at the nanoscale. Advancements in THz technology enable physical processes in materials to be identified...

Fall 2021
The advent of the terahertz scanning tunneling microscope (THz-STM) brings with it a new method of observing and characterizing the ultrafast dynamics of materials. The sub-nanometer spatial resolution of an ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscope (UHV-STM) coupled with the sub-picosecond...

Fall 2024
Terahertz-Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (THz-STM) is an exciting combination of THz experiments and STM. In conventional STM, an atomically sharp tip is used to measure the topography of a surface with sub-nanometer spatial resolution. Meanwhile, terahertz spectroscopy experiments can be used to...

Marin Calzada, Jesus Alejandro
Scanning probe microscopes routinely provide atomic resolution of numerous materials, but lack the tools to investigate their ultrafast dynamics. Laser pulses can be generated in the femtosecond or even attosecond regime, but their spatial application is restricted by the diffraction limit....

Fall 2009
This thesis focuses on the study of the electromagnetic properties of active spinplasmonic artificial materials. Artificial materials are composites having a macroscopic electromagnetic response that arises due to electromagnetic and electronic interactions between subwavelength sized elements....
