This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Spring 2013
The objective of this research was to investigate the impact of variation in starch morphology and molecular structure among starches isolated from triticale, wheat, corn and barley (normal, waxy, and high-amylose genotypes) on amylolysis. Native starch granules in their unfractionated and...

Spring 2017
Starch nanoparticles (SNP) were isolated by acid hydrolysis from starches varying in amylose content and crystalline type, and physicochemically characterized in terms of their morphology, particle size, crystallinity, molecular size distribution, chain length distribution, amylase resistance and...

Spring 2017
Mature fine tailings (MFT) are one of the major problems of the oil sands industry in Alberta, specifically due to the reclamation of the land filled with them. Stepping away from the most common approach of dewatering processes, this research is based on the manufacture of useful composite...

Starch-based Films Incorporated with Different Bioactive Compounds for Food Packaging Using Pressurized Hot Water Technology
DownloadSpring 2019
In recent years, biodegradable polymers, like starch, have been studied as potential packaging materials to deal with the increasing concern on plastic disposal/degradation and to extend food products shelf-life. This objective of this thesis was to develop bioactive starch-based films using...

Spring 2014
Two studies examined the effects of 3 commercial cat diets varying in glycemic index (GI) based on ingredient composition and starch content (34.1, 29.5, and 23.6% NFE for high, medium, and low GI, respectively) on metabolizable energy (ME), indirect calorimetry and blood measurements. In Study...

Start-up Analysis of a Partial Nitrification Aerobic Granular Sludge System Treating High-Strength Municipal Digestate Supernatant
DownloadFall 2023
Ammonia pollution is a growing environmental concern affecting wastewater treatment. With rising concerns about energy consumption and increasingly strict discharge regulations, mitigation of energy expenditure and maintenance of high pollutant removal efficiency have fueled advances in...

Fall 2012
This thesis develops an online parameter and state estimation scheme for a linear parameter varying (LPV) system that utilizes an iterative moving window technique. In the proposed scheme, an online algorithm, based on the input/output measurement, is implemented to approximate the real system...

Fall 2019
Measurements in the process industry can arrive with fast or slow sampling rates. Fast measurements such as flowrate and temperature are sampled frequently and are obtained instantly after sampling. The slow measurements, which are usually related with chemical quality variables such as product...
