This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

High Power Converters for Current Source Converter-Type Series DC-Based Wind Energy Conversion System
DownloadFall 2024
The high-voltage direct current (HVDC)-based wind energy conversion system (WECS) currently used in the industry requires a large and expensive substation. An emerging technology called current source converter (CSC)-type series DC-based WECS, can eliminate the need for the bulky and costly...

High resolution and high efficiency biomolecular sensing using solid-state and hybrid bilayer MoS2 nanopores
DownloadFall 2021
Solid-state nanopores have emerged as stable label- and amplification- free biosensors for rapid detection of charged biomolecules. Analytes are electrophoretically pulled through nanopores and are detected using the characteristic blockade current due to the translocation. However, despite their...

High Resolution Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy of Molecular Complexes Containing Water and Ammonia
DownloadSpring 2013
In this thesis, the results of high resolution molecular spectroscopic studies of several prototype molecular complexes containing either water or ammonia molecule and the instrumentation development of an infrared spectrometer which is used to carry out the main part of the experimental work are...

High resolution optical tweezers for single molecule studies of hierarchical folding in the pbuE riboswitch aptamer
DownloadSpring 2010
Riboswitches are gene regulatory elements found in messenger RNA that function by changing structure upon the binding of a ligand to an aptamer domain. Single adenine-binding pbuE riboswitch aptamer RNAs were unfolded and refolded co-transcriptionally using optical tweezers for single molecule...

High Resolution Rotational Spectroscopic Studies of the Dynamics and Conformations of Dispersion and Hydrogen Bonded Molecular Complexes
DownloadFall 2022
High resolution rotational spectra of non-covalently bonded molecular clusters produced in a supersonic jet expansion can provide detailed and rich information about their structure-energy relationship and dynamical behaviors. In this thesis, several non-covalently bonded molecular clusters which...

High Resolution Spectroscopy of Chirality Recognition and Solvation of Prototype Chiral Molecular Systems
DownloadFall 2014
The chirality recognition, chirality induction, chirality amplification, chirality synchronization and solvation of prototypic chiral molecular systems were studied using chirped pulse and cavity based Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy with the aid of high level ab initio calculations. The...
