This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Enhancement of menadione cytotoxicity by bicarbonate: redox cycling and a possible role for the carbonate radical in quinone cytotoxicity
DownloadSpring 2013
We investigated the effect of bicarbonate on quinone redox cycling and cytotoxicity. A cell-free system utilized menadione and ascorbic acid to catalyze a redox cycle, and we utilized murine hepatoma (Hepa 1c1c7) cells for in vitro experiments. Experiments were performed using low (2 mM) vs...

Spring 2018
The beneficial feature of the application of natural gas in the automotive industry is the lowest carbon content of any fossil fuel, which results in the lowest CO2 emissions. On the other hand, the concern of atmospheric pollution due to methane emissions from natural-gas vehicles (NGV) engines...

Fall 2016
Recently, considerable research has been conducted into solid-acid catalyzed carbonylation of dimethyl ether (DME) to methyl acetate (MeOAc), which can be further used for the iodine-free production of ethanol or acetic acid. The zeolite mordenite (H-MOR) is known as a potential catalyst but is...

Enhancements to Methods for Planning and Scheduling Fabrication Projects Utilizing Multiskilled Labour Resources
DownloadSpring 2023
In prefabrication and off-site construction, various multiskilled work crews need to be assembled to work on different workstations to process custom-designed work units, each having specific requirements for material handling, assembly connections, welding, etc. However, the frequent labour...

Enhancements to Reconstruction Techniques in Computed Tomography Using High Performance Computing
DownloadFall 2012
Computers have been used in diagnostic imaging for decades, but High-Performance Computing (HPC) in diagnostic imaging is rather rare because of the high cost associated with traditional HPC. Recent advancements in shared memory computers and the large market for commodity graphic cards have...

Enhancing Activity-on-Node Network Diagramming Technique for Modeling Interdependent Workflows in Planning Fabrication Projects
DownloadFall 2022
Fabrication operations produce made-to-order structural components (such steel elements or precast concrete) for multiple construction projects, which require crews to repeat their work at a number of workstations or locations in a special manufacturing facility. Scheduling these interdependent...

Enhancing Adversarial Robustness Through Model Optimization on Clean Data in Deep Neural Networks
DownloadFall 2024
Adversarial robustness has emerged as a critical area in deep learning due to the increasing application of deep neural networks (DNNs) and the consequent demand for their security. Adversarial examples, which are inputs modified with imperceptible perturbations to deceive DNNs, have garnered...

Enhancing Anaerobic Digestion Efficiency of High Strength Wastes with Different Solid Contents
DownloadSpring 2023
Anaerobic digestion has been considered as a sustainable technology to treat a wide range of organic wastes and to recovery value-added products such as methane and fatty acids. However, several factors such as low temperature and high solids content of substrates would lead to the imbalance of...
