This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Spring 2021
Over the past decade, the interplay between symmetry and topology in condensed matter physics has not only deepened our understanding of matter by prompting a conceptual revolution in classifying all phases of matter, but it has also led to tremendous progress in finding new materials with low...

Fall 2021
Molecular abundance ratios have been proposed to trace the chemical and evolutionary state of star forming molecular clouds because the formation and destruction of such molecules is dependent on the local environmental conditions, like the density and radiation field that both evolve with time....

Fall 2021
AR Sco is the first known white dwarf pulsar and currently there is no definitive model for its emission or evolution. This type of binary system could be a critical step in the formation of magnetic cataclysmic variables, a type of accreting white dwarf/M dwarf binary system. In this thesis, I...

Application of Magnetic Techniques in Albertan Oil Sands Cores For Improved Reservoir Characterization
DownloadSpring 2021
This study assessed some novel techniques to improve oil sand reservoir characterization. The main focus was on high resolution, non-destructive, low field probe volume magnetic susceptibility measurements on slabbed core from 3 oil sands wells in northern Alberta. The results demonstrated that...

Spring 2021
The development of the modern transistor has sparked a technological revolution which has flourished for the past 70 years. Advancements in transistor design and fabrication have allowed for their continued shrinking in size and increase in operation speed. With the continued reduction in size...

Bound State Phenomena: Positronium Molecule and Muon Decays, and the Electron Magnetic Moment
DownloadFall 2021
Particle physics is the study of the fundamental constituents of matter and their interactions. The study of bound states of elementary particles such as positronium and dipositronium, whose lifetime is short, is important for understanding properties of bound leptons with precision. The...

Exotic binaries in Galactic globular clusters: identification, classification, and their formation
DownloadFall 2021
Globular clusters (GCs) are dense and massive stellar populations, which provide a unique environment where the high stellar density facilitates frequent dynamical encounters, creating many exotic binaries. These exotic binaries generally have short orbits and often harbour compact objects,...

Integration of microseismic and time-lapse seismic data with application to a heavy oil reservoir
DownloadFall 2021
Thermal heavy oil extraction techniques are high temperature and pressure procedures to produce heavy oil. Elevated temperature and pressures alter the subsurface stresses, causing shear failure of rock within and surrounding the steam front. The steam also introduces volumetric changes at the...

Spring 2021
Both short and long pulse laser plasma interactions are investigated by theoreti- cal analysis and modern computational techniques. An extensive set of simulations of short pulse laser plasma based particle accelerators are performed with the aim of improving performance and diagnostics of the...
