This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2020
There have been attempts by many researchers over the years to improve the prediction of Inadvertent Return (IR) during Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). An analytical model of the maximum allowable mud pressure during HDD, Pmax, has been commonly referred as “Delft method” and it has been...

Investigation of Environmental and Dynamic Loading Impacts on Flexible Pavement Responses in Cold Climate Conditions
DownloadFall 2016
Flexible pavement design methods have undergone a paradigm shift with particular attention to mechanistic-based approaches, which are based on the actual pavement’s structural behaviour and reflect the pavement performance. The mechanistic design procedures rely on the pavement’s critical...
-
Fall 2023
Pavements in cold regions face challenging environmental conditions, including prolonged periods of extreme cold, frost heave, and freeze-thaw cycles during late winter and early spring. These factors contribute to premature damage, reduced service life, and increased maintenance costs for cold...

Optimization of Drilling Fluid Flow Rates – A Study of the Drilling Fluid Flow rates and Annular Pressure in Horizontal Directional Drilling
DownloadSpring 2023
Trenchless technologies have experienced the fast development and dramatic change in the past three decades. Derived from oil and gas industry, Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is considered as one of the most rapidly expanded trenchless technologies and widely used in infrastructure...

Predicting Soil Expansion Force in Static Pipe Bursting Using Cavity Expansion Solutions and Numerical Modeling
DownloadSpring 2015
The prediction of total pull force is critical to the design of static pipe bursting installation and soil expansion is the major component of the total pull force. However, there are currently limited methods available for its prediction. In this thesis, three cavity expansion solutions, namely...

Spring 2014
This thesis focuses on conducting productivity analysis for sewer mainline CCTV inspection through two phases: 1) developing the standard time for CCTV inspection and analyzing the effect of the weather condition and ambient temperature on its productivity, and 2) reviewing the CCTV process...
-
Fall 2016
Since its first application in the 1970s, Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) has steadily become one of the fastest growing trenchless construction methods for utility and conduit installation under surface obstacles. This rapid growth in HDD application could not have been accomplished...

Spring 2016
Trenchless technology has brought a new era in pipeline installation, overtaking the customary open cut method. Several new trenchless installation techniques are now practicable, among which Guided Boring Method (GBM), pipe jacking and microtunnelling are most remarkable. All these methods are...
