This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

An Exploration of Solution-Based SERS with Gold Nanostars for Quality Control in the Cannabis Industry
DownloadSpring 2021
The recent legalization of cannabis and cannabis consumables in Canada presents a new analytical challenge for quality control of cannabis products. A high-performance analytical tool for such purposes would be crucial for the rapidly expanding Canadian and global cannabis markets. This project...

Spring 2021
The atmospheric processing of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) leading to the formation and evolution of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) is highly complex, involving “multiphase” chemistry occurring in the gas, particle, and aqueous phases (e.g., cloudwater, fog, aerosol liquid...

Spring 2021
A thorough overview of esters and their reductions is presented. A large focus was placed on reductions via homogeneous catalytic hydrogenation. Although several ester hydrogenation systems have been developed, the production of highly enantioenriched alcohols has generally relied upon the usage...

Carbon-on-Gold Films and Spontaneous Adsorption of Aryldiazonium Salts for Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensing
DownloadFall 2021
Over the past decades, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technology has gained popularity as a powerful analytical technique for the study of biomolecular interactions and medical diagnostics. This is made possible thanks to the well-established gold-thiolate chemistry. However, the limited...

Fall 2021
The development of life sciences has imposed higher requirements for biochemical analysis, especially for point-of-care analysis. Polymer-made centrifugal CD microfluidic chips could fulfill the needs of biochemical analysis with their low cost, the feasibility of mass production, excellent...
-
Fall 2021
Metabolomics refers to the characterization and quantification of small molecule metabolic products in a biological specimen. It is an emerging and evolving science studying the practice of precious medicine. Metabolomics study has been used to understand individual variations influenced by both...
-
Spring 2021
The chirality controlledstructural panoramas of several prototypic chiral molecular systems were studied in a conformational specific manner using molecular rotational resonance spectroscopy. Comprehensive conformational ensemble spaces were explored theoretically to aid the interpretation of...

Decomposition and Feature Selection of Comprehensive 2-DimensionalGas Chromatography - Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry(GC×GC-TOFMS) Data
DownloadFall 2021
Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography - Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS) is an advanced instrumental technique that separates complex mixtures along two chromatographic dimensions, followed by multivariate detection that collects mass spectral information at a high...

Developing an M3 Antagonist for Molecular Imaging of Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptors in Breast Cancer
DownloadFall 2021
The lack of the three targeted receptors, estrogen, progesterone, and the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, causes difficulty in treating triple negative type cancers. Most often, patients with this type of malignancy have a low chance of survival. The focus of this work will be on...

Development of Chemical Isotope Labeling (CIL) Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) for Single-Cell Metabolomics
DownloadFall 2021
Single-cell metabolomics (SCM) strives to identify, quantify and characterize all metabolites in a single-cell. The study of the metabolome enhances our understanding of the cellular interaction with and in response to environmental influences at the molecular level. As cells are being analyzed...
