Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2020
This study focuses on the synthesis process of gelatin-shelled microbubbles and their characterization. A new method to synthesize gelatin-shelled microbubbles was described. Briefly, Traut’s reagent was used to thiolate gelatin molecules; then sonication forces were placed at the water-air...

Synthesis and Characterization of Phosphorylcholine-based Polymers and Nanogels via the Reversible Addition Fragmentation Chain Transfer Process
DownloadFall 2011
2-Methacryloyloxyethyl Phosphorylcholine is an interesting biocompatible monomer. An improved method for the synthesis of poly(MPC) and its copolymers using Reversible Addition-Fragmentation chain Transfer (RAFT) has been discussed in the first part of the thesis. Previous reports related to the...

Synthesis and microstructural characterization of manganese oxide electrodes for application as electrochemical supercapacitors
DownloadFall 2011
The aim of this thesis work was to synthesize Mn-based oxide electrodes with high surface area structures by anodic electrodeposition for application as electrochemical capacitors. Rod-like structures provide large surface areas leading to high specific capacitances. Since templated...
-
Synthesis of Manganese-Based Electrode Materials Prepared by a Novel Dynamic Floating Electrodeposition (DFE) Method for Energy Storage Devices
DownloadSpring 2017
Electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices such as batteries and supercapacitors have been widely applied in many different fields. Electrode materials play a key role in improving the electrochemical performance of energy storage devices. Among various electrode materials, Mn-based...
-
Synthesis of millimeter-scale carbon nanotube arrays and their applications on electrochemical supercapacitors
DownloadFall 2010
This research is aimed at synthesizing millimeter-scale carbon nanotube arrays (CNTA) by conventional chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) and water-assisted chemical vapor deposition (WACVD) methods, and exploring their application as catalyst supports for electrochemical supercapacitors. The growth...
-
Synthesis of poly(methyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) copolymers and their application in the development of oral and transdermal drug delivery systems
DownloadSpring 2020
pH-responsive polymers have been intensively investigated over the years due to their diverse applications in environmental decontamination, nutrient delivery/packaging, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical science. A pH-responsive swelling/shrinkage behavior of encapsulation systems can be accounted...
-
Synthesis, Characterization of Novel Porous Carbon Materials and Their Application in CO2 Capture
DownloadSpring 2016
This research is aimed at developing novel, porous activated carbon materials that are used for CO2 capture. The research is mainly composed of two parts: synthesis, characterization of novel porous carbons produced via KOH activation; and evaluation of their preliminary CO2 capture performances....
-
Synthesis, Characterization, and 3D Printing of Conductive Polyhydroxybutyrate-Graphenic Nanomaterial Composites
DownloadSpring 2021
Advances in materials development are leading to the emergence of new classes of printable and inexpensive electronic devices, including sensors for healthcare monitoring. Most traditional sensors are built on rigid substrates, which restricts the use of these sensors. Research is driven by...

Tailoring sorption properties of nano-sized multilayer structured magnesium for hydrogen storage
DownloadFall 2012
To tailor the hydrogen sorption properties of magnesium, improve its poor kinetics and alter its thermodynamics properties, sputtered multilayer Mg-based thin films were prepared in which Mg layers were confined by AlTi layers. Multilayer samples of different Mg thickness showed relatively long...
