Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2012
This thesis is focused on the design of a series of bi-metallic catalyst for enhancing the hydrogen sorption kinetics of magnesium hydride. We have utilized thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering technique as model systems to study various alloys and compositions. It has been known that the...
-
Spring 2015
This thesis presents a thorough examination of the corrosion and fouling behaviour of crude oil at refining conditions on industrially applicable heat transfer surfaces. The depletion of light sweet crude oil reserves means that the processing of ever heavier and more sour crude oils is...

High Performance Germanium-based Anode Materials for Lithium-ion and Sodium-ion Rechargeable Batteries
DownloadFall 2014
In this thesis the electrochemical performance of germanium nanowires (GeNWs) as anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and tin-germanium-antimony (Sn-Ge-Sb) thin films as anode for sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) have been investigated. Scientific literature shows a substantial study-to-study...
-
Fall 2013
This thesis outlines the development of two platforms for integrating microfabricated sensors with high pressure feedthroughs for application in hostile high temperature high pressure environments. An application in oil well production logging is explored and two sensors were implemented with...

Microstructure-property correlation in magnesium-based hydrogen storage systems- The case for ball-milled magnesium hydride powder and Mg-based multilayered composites
DownloadSpring 2011
The main focus of this thesis is the characterization of defects and microstructure in high-energy ball milled magnesium hydride powder and magnesium-based multilayered composites. Enhancement in kinetics of hydrogen cycling in magnesium can be achieved by applying severe plastic deformation. A...

Nanoscale resonators fabricated from metallic alloys, and modeling and simulation of polycrystalline thin film growth
DownloadSpring 2010
Part I - We have designed a binary metallic alloy for nanoscale resonator applications. We used magnetron sputtering to deposit films with different stoichiometries of aluminum and molybdenum and then characterized the microstructure and physical properties of each film. A structure zone map is...
-
Fall 2011
Hydrogen storage has been a key area of focus in the clean energy field for over a decade, as it is a major obstacle to the widespread adoption of fuel cells for mobile applications. The aim of this thesis research was to improve the Magnesium Aluminum hydrogen storage system in order to make it...

Tailoring sorption properties of nano-sized multilayer structured magnesium for hydrogen storage
DownloadFall 2012
To tailor the hydrogen sorption properties of magnesium, improve its poor kinetics and alter its thermodynamics properties, sputtered multilayer Mg-based thin films were prepared in which Mg layers were confined by AlTi layers. Multilayer samples of different Mg thickness showed relatively long...

The Role of Sulfur Species in Establishing the Corrosion Reactions in Refinery Metallurgies
DownloadSpring 2016
This thesis is focused on the studying the role that model sulfur-containing molecules have in corrosion reactions on relevant metallurgies. This was done by using a design of experiments where a number of sulfur-based compounds were reacted with various metallurgies. The 8 model sulfur compounds...

Spring 2011
We have designed and engineered bi-catalyst magnesium hydride composites with superior sorption performance to that of ball milled magnesium hydride catalyzed with the individual baseline catalysts. We have examined the effect of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)-metallic nanoparticle...
