This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2017
In a recent construction project, a platform structure made up of 350W and 300W steel underwent a double dip galvanizing process. Prior to the galvanizing process, the platform was fabricated to completion, which included numerous welds throughout the design. After galvanizing, cracks were found...

Creation and Characterization of Ceramic/Polymer Bi-Continuous Composite Material for Hot-Bitumen Pipeline Coating
DownloadSpring 2015
Current composite materials base their capabilities from the dispersion of discrete reinforcing materials throughout a matrix. This method places too much reliance on the surface bond between matrix and reinforcing phase. By employing two continuous, interpenetrating materials, it is theorized...

Critical Analysis of Train Occurrences in Canada through Process Safety Techniques and Safety Risk Model Approach
DownloadSpring 2023
Canada’s national rail network is the third-largest in the world, playing a vital role in moving goods and people across the country. Rail transportation transfers $320 billion worth of goods and over 100 million passengers annually. Although railway activities are beneficial to Canada’s...

Data analysis for the classification of gas-liquid and liquid-solid (slurry) flows using digital signal processing
DownloadSpring 2013
The Canadian oil sand industry operates three phase gas-liquid-solid hydrotransport pipelines to transport oil sand ore from mines to processing facilities. This hydrotransport process is critical to downstream separation activities, given the conditioning steps that occur within it: (i) lump...

Spring 2011
Data based abnormality detection is a growing research field focussed on extracting information from feature rich data. They are considered to be non-intrusive and non-destructive in nature which gives them a clear advantage over conventional methods. In this study, we explore different streams...

Fall 2015
A number of industrial processes involve variables that cannot be reliably measured in real time using online sensors. Many such variables are required as inputs in control schemes to ensure safe and efficient plant operation. Laboratory analysis, which is a reliable method of measuring these...

Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery for Process identification and multivariate monitoring using spectroscopy: application to low temperature bitumen visbreaking
DownloadFall 2016
Data mining and knowledge discovery is a systematic process of identifying useful information from a data set where there is no or limited information about the underlying process. In this study, data mining and other learning methods are used cohesively to model a low temperature visbreaking...

Spring 2018
Steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) is an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology widely used in Canada. Data available in SAGD industrial processes contain valuable information for monitoring, soft sensing, control, and optimization. This thesis focuses on data mining and optimization in the...

Data Quality Assessment for Closed-Loop System Identification and Forecasting with Application to Soft Sensors
DownloadFall 2012
In many chemical plants, data historians store thousands of variables at fast sampling rates. Much of this collected data is routine operating data that could easily be used for system identification and forecasting, especially in the design of soft sensors. Currently, there is no framework for...

Data-driven development of advanced controllers for complex reaction systems with minimal prior information
DownloadFall 2024
In the realm of complex reactive systems where full knowledge of ongoing reactions is unattainable, the adoption of data-driven inferential models based on mixture spectra has gained significant traction. Spectra-based online monitoring has shown promise due to the rapidity, non-invasiveness,...
