Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Postbreeding movement patterns and multiscale habitat use of adult wood frogs (Lithobates sylvaticus) at urban wetlands of Edmonton, Alberta.
DownloadSpring 2014
Many studies have focused on the effects of urbanization on amphibian species richness, abundance and diversity, but few studies have quantified the effect on amphibian movement behaviour or habitat use. At 11 urban wetlands in Edmonton, Alberta, I examined the postbreeding movement behaviour and...

Predator and Prey, Past, Present, and Projected: Modelling Polar Bears and Ringed Seals in a Dynamic Arctic
DownloadFall 2019
Climate change is causing the Arctic to warm faster than anywhere else on earth. The projected effects of a warmer Arctic include changes in population dynamics and distributions, biodiversity, food web structure, and ecosystem services. Our ability to successfully monitor ecological changes and...

Fall 2018
For male breeding songbirds, song rate varies throughout the breeding season and tends to be correlated with breeding-cycle stages. Although these patterns have been well documented, to our knowledge, this relationship has not been used to predict a bird’s breeding status through acoustic...

Predictive Mapping of Yellow Rail (Coturnicops noveboracensis) Density and Abundance in the Western Boreal Forest via Ground and Satellite Remote Sensors
DownloadFall 2019
The Yellow Rail (Coturnicops noveboracensis) is a small, secretive, wetland bird, which is apparently rare throughout most of its range. Almost nothing is known about its abundance and density in the wetlands of the western boreal forest. Emerging technologies have enabled us to effectively...

Preservation of Tissue Structures in Late Cretaceous Vertebrate Remains from Alberta, Canada
DownloadFall 2020
Here I investigate the rates of preserved original organic tissue and their quality within vertebrate bones that were preserved during the late Cretaceous of Alberta. Specimens recovered from the Dinosaur Park Formation provide a baseline for comparison to four other Alberta Formations (Brazeau,...

Production and detection of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) in the alphaproteobacterial methanotroph Methylocystis sp. Rockwell
DownloadSpring 2023
Anthropogenic agricultural and industrial activities have intensified in the past few decades to satisfy the food and energy demands of a rapidly growing human population. The increase in these activities is causing extremely high emission of greenhouse gases which results in global warming and...

Projecting boreal bird responses to climate change considering uncertainty, refugia, vegetation lags, and post-glaciation history
DownloadSpring 2016
Often referred to as North America’s bird nursery, the boreal forest biome provides a productive environment for breeding birds, supporting high species diversity and bird numbers. These birds are likely to shift their distributions northward in response to rapid climate change over the next...
