This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Application of Machine Learning in the Big Data for Broiler Breeders Recorded by a Precision Feeding System
DownloadSpring 2021
A precision feeding (PF) system developed at the University of Alberta is an innovation in precise nutrition and management for broiler breeders. The PF system can automatically feed individual broiler breeders and record vast amounts of real-time data regarding the feeding activity of individual...

Approximately 70% of the cost of beef production is impacted by dietary intake. Maximizing production efficiency of beef cattle requires not only genetic selection to maximize feed efficiency (i.e. residual feed intake - RFI), but also adequate nutrition throughout all stages of growth and...

Application of non-linear modelling to efficiency and nutrient partitioning in broilers and broiler breeders
DownloadSpring 2021
DesLauriers, Airell Grayson Camille
Nutritive values of feedstuffs used in broiler rations vary significantly. Corn and wheat are theprimary energy sources in many broiler diets, depending on geographical availability. As feed is a largeproportion of live production costs, broiler operations may decrease diet nutrient density to...

Assessing the Preconception Dietary Intake of Canadian Adults using a new, short dietary assessment tool: The PREP’D Study
DownloadFall 2021
Background: A self-administered, 24-question dietary tool, called the Diet Screening for Adults in Canada (D-SAC), was chosen for use by the Canadian, Healthy Life Trajectories Initiative (HeLTI-Canada). Assessment of the reproducibility and comparability (to another dietary assessment tool) of...

Blood and Urinary Metabotyping Reveals Potential Predictive Biomarkers for Identifying Dairy Cows at Risk of Subclinical Mastitis During the Dry-Off Period
DownloadFall 2021
Subclinical mastitis (SCM) remains one of the most important infectious diseases of dairy cows as it is associated with considerable losses in milk production and financial revenue. Currently, most SCM research and practices focus on diagnosing this intramammary infection (IMI) by counting...

Comparative isolation of bacteria from inflamed sites to identify inflammation-tailored bacteria
DownloadSpring 2021
Microbial culture collections are fundamental to microbiology research. However, with the advent of next generation sequencing research, the generation and maintenance of comprehensive culture collections has become deprioritized. As such a need exists for the improved isolation of diverse...

Fall 2021
Hypertension is the leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, afflicting > 20% of adults worldwide (~1 in 4 in Canada). Pharmaceutical drugs are the primary treatment for hypertension, but are generally associated with side effects. Recently, food-derived antihypertensive peptides are...

Fall 2021
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) occurs when the cells in the body are unable to respond to the effect of insulin, resulting in a state of hyperglycemia that could involve other health complications. The prevalence of this disease generates a great concern worldwide and suggests a move towards...

Fall 2021
Background: Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disease that results in inflammation and damage to the small intestine when gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye or barley is consumed. The only treatment for CD is lifelong adherence to the gluten-free diet (GFD). However, dietary intake can be...

Fall 2021
Kumarapeli, Kumarapeli Arachchige Dinithi V.
Rising global atmospheric temperature can negatively affect the reproductive development of crops including wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) which can ultimately lead to a reduction in seed set and yield. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of moderate heat stress (35 °C for 6 h per...
