This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Spring 2018
Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) is a thermal recovery technology currently employed to extract heavy oil and high viscosity bitumen from Alberta oil sands. Due to the unconsolidated nature of oil sands, SAGD wells are prone to producing sand, hence, requiring sand control devices to...
-
Experimental and Numerical Study into the Performance Assessment of Stand-alone Screens in Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage Operations
DownloadFall 2021
Sand production is a significant issue for weakly consolidated and unconsolidated formations. Sanding can erode the wellbore and surface facilities and plug the wellbore. In SAGD operations, wellbores are typically completed by stand-alone screens such as slotted liners (SL), wire-wrapped screens...
-
Fall 2017
Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD), today is the most promising technique to extract heavy oil from oil sands reservoirs. Maintenance of integrity of the near-well area is crucial to help ensure that the reserves are produced properly without environmental or production optimization...
-
Spring 2016
The Joslyn steam release incident in 2006 has significantly influenced the approval process for steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) projects, which now require rigorous caprock integrity assessment to be conducted. In the past, most of the research efforts have been devoted to reservoir...
-
Spring 2019
Petroleum reservoir managers must make decisions about projects (e.g. infill drilling and/or operational strategies) with uncertain economic results due to imperfect knowledge of the reservoir geometry and properties. Their decision-making workflows should actively manage the geological...
-
Heterogeneity Consideration and Upscaling of elastic properties in coupled geomechanical flow simulation of SAGD
DownloadFall 2013
Geomechanical processes occurring during steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) thermal recovery influence petrophysical and rock mechanical properties of both reservoir and caprock formations. While geostatistical techniques provide multiple equi probable geological realizations for...
-
Spring 2020
A sizeable portion of the Athabasca oil sand reservoir is classified as Inclined Heterolithic Stratification (IHS). IHS is a particular type of lithosome that is comprised of two alternating lithologies which are fluvially-dominated sand beds and brackish tidally-influenced mud beds. However, due...
-
Inflow and Outflow Rates Control in SAGD Wells: An Integrated Approach of Data-Driven and Physical-Based Analysis
DownloadSpring 2024
The utilization of the Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) method entails significant natural gas consumption and extensive water handling and treatment. The effective inflow and outflow rates control in producer and injector wells holds paramount importance. It serves multiple objectives,...
-
Fall 2019
The impact of geomechanical behavior in the SAGD process has received increased attention over the last decade because of its importance in assessing caprock integrity and potential influence on production performance. The deformations and potential shear failures in the reservoir lead to...

Investigating Light Solvent Aided Process in Cold Lake Oil-Sand Reservoir Using Experimental and Numerical Approaches
DownloadSpring 2019
Steam assisted- gravity drainage (SAGD) is the main in-situ bitumen recovery process in which saturated steam is injected into the bitumen zone. However, it has some drawbacks, which include high-energy consumption and significant environmental concerns. Solvent Aided Process (SAP) is a method...
