This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Characterization of Aerosol Deposition in Children and Infants Using Idealized Extrathoracic Geometries
DownloadFall 2014
This thesis describes a number of experimental studies performed with the common goal of characterizing pharmaceutical aerosol deposition in children and infants using idealized extrathoracic geometries. First, an in vitro study of the recently proposed Alberta Idealized Child Throat showed that...

Characterization of Particulate Emissions of Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition Engines
DownloadFall 2013
The particle size distribution, volatility, and effective density of particulate matter are measured using a cooperative fuel research engine during motoring, spark ignition, and homogeneous charge compression ignition. For all operating modes, less than 5% of the particulate mass remains when...
-
Characterization of Particulate Matter Morphology and Volatility for Two Direct-Injection Engines
DownloadFall 2015
Particulate matter emitted from two direct injection engines has been characterized by morphology, volatility, mass-mobility exponent, effective density, and size distribution using tandem measurements from a centrifugal particle mass analyzer (CPMA) and differential mobility analyzers (DMA). The...

Proper understanding of SAGD produced water and boiler blow down (BBD) water in particular is required to propose effective treatment processes for reuse and reduction in the quantity of disposable water. BBD contains high dissolved organic matter (DOM) and total dissolved solid (TDS). This...

Characterization of Stable Delamination Growth in Fiber-reinforced Polymers using Analytical and Numerical approaches
DownloadSpring 2013
A new test method, named internal-notched-flexure (INF) test, has recently been proposed to quantify mode II interlaminar fracture toughness of fibre composites. Previous investigation has shown that unlike any of the existing test methods, the INF test generates unconditionally stable...

Characterization of the dissolved organic matter in steam assisted gravity drainage boiler blow-down water
DownloadFall 2012
The presence of high concentrations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and total dissolved solids (TDS) in the boiler blow-down water (BBD) causes severe equipment fouling during the SAGD operation. For effective BBD management, a detailed understanding of the BBD chemistry is important. In this...
