This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Assessment of Human Trunk Kinetics Using a Multi-Segment Model: An Approach to Minimize the Propagation of Experimental Errors
DownloadSpring 2018
Evaluating several pathological conditions such as low-back pain, scoliosis, herniated discs, and postural stability after spinal cord injury or chronic stroke requires a deep understanding of the inter-spinal interactions. Assessing the kinetics of the human head-arms-trunk (HAT) could provide...

Fall 2022
Concerns about the climate and the need for energy security motivate the shift towards sustainable means of energy production. Biorefineries are facilities that convert biomass into material and energy products. Biorefineries are a key component of ensuring increased sustainability of the global...

Static mixers are in-line motionless devices placed into a pipe to promote the blending of miscible fluids or dispersion of immiscible liquids. These inserts are characterized by the mixing performance and the pressure drop they create. New designs of static mixers are continuously proposed to...

Spring 2019
Inspired by nature, structured interfaces have been shown to enhance adhesion by trapping crack propagation along the interface. To propagate the trapped crack, more energy input is required externally and therefore the effective fracture toughness is increased. In many applications, directional...

Visible plumes discharged by cooling towers have gained much attention due to their negative aesthetic and environmental impact. To achieve plume abatement, many previous designs mix warm, dry air with the hot, humid air rising from the cooling tower fill in the plenum chamber and thereby...

Atmospheric Spray Freeze-Drying on Common Biologics and Excipients as a Comparison to Lyophilization
DownloadSpring 2019
Atmospheric spray freeze-drying (ASFD) is an alternative freeze-drying process to conventional vacuum freeze-drying. ASFD involves spray-freezing biologics of interest in a feedstock into a cold freezing chamber. Cold drying gas passes through the chamber at a high flow rate to sublime the water...

Fall 2018
This thesis studies integrative augmentation with customer satisfaction (CS) standards in a service and a manufacturing organization. Case study organization 1 (CSO 1) is an engineering course operated in a Western Canadian university. In this course, surveys were undertaken that addressed...
