This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2014
Discarded tires have been an environmental concern in different parts of the world. One mass application to avoid such environmental concern is to use them as embankment fill material in civil engineering projects. In such applications, discarded tires are usually used in a shred form referred as...

Assessment of Drilling Fluid Hole Cleaning Capacity in Horizontal Directional Drilling – A Parametric Study of the Effects of Drilling Fluid Additives
DownloadFall 2018
Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) as one of the most popular trenchless technology has seen a rapid growth during the past decades. Hole cleaning has been one of the most challenging problems of the directional well drilling in the oil and gas industry. As an outgrowth of the directional...

Assessment of Viscoelastic Properties of Drilling Fluids and their Impact on Hole Cleaning Capacity in Horizontal Directional Drilling
DownloadFall 2022
Trenchless construction technologies are a group of construction methods that use strategies to minimize or eliminate surface excavation. Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is one commonly used trenchless method and can be used HDD to install underground pipelines and conduits. Additionally,...

Evaluation of Different Winter Road Conditions and Effectiveness of Winter Road Maintenance Operations
DownloadFall 2014
This study uses friction measurements of Real Time Traction Tool (RT3)-Curve to characterize different road conditions, evaluate the effect of winter maintenance operations, and identify influential parameters. The reliability of RT3-Curve device was verified by a speed-dependency analysis....

Evaluation of Methods Used to Estimate the Required Thrust Force for Direct Pipe Installation Within Clayey Soil Based on Case Studies
DownloadSpring 2019
There is a unique technology called Direct Pipe Installation (DPI) developed by Herrenknecht Tunnelling Systems (Herrenknecht) which is becoming more a prominent construction method in the pipeline crossing industry. This construction technique is completed by connecting a micro tunnel boring...

Evaluation of the Effects of Canadian Climatic Conditions on Pavement Performance using the Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide
DownloadFall 2011
This thesis attempts to explore the implementation of the Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) in Canada, specifically in Alberta. In order to achieve this goal, quality of Canadian climate data files used for the MEPDG and its effects on flexible pavement performance were...
