This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2018
The fluids produced from a thermal enhanced recovery process such as steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) and cyclic steam stimulation (CSS) are pumped to the surface where bitumen and water are separated. This initial fluid is known as SAGD-PW (produced water). A potential way to effectively...

Spring 2014
Ghafelebashi Zarand, Sayid Mohammad
The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of Athabasca vacuum residue (AVR) has been studied by thermogravimetric analysis. Three heating rates of 0.5, 10 and 25 K/min were used to investigate the consistency of kinetic parameters. The Weibull and Gaussian distribution functions were found to be...

Spring 2017
Recently, increasing attention has been given to the theoretical and practical analysis of large-scale networked systems. Large-scale systems are usually composed of several interconnected subsystems connected through material and energy flows. Due to the scale of these systems and the...

Fall 2014
Large-scale complex chemical processes increasingly appear in the modern process industry due to their economic efficiency. Such a large-scale complex chemical process usually consists of several unit operations (subsystems), which are connected together through material and energy flows. Because...

Distributed Parameter Control of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) for Diesel-Powered Vehicles
DownloadFall 2013
The main scope of this work is to design a distributed parameter control for SCR, which is modelled by using coupled hyperbolic and parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs). This is a boundary control problem where the control objectives are to reduce the amount of NOx emissions and...

Spring 2010
Bitumen froth from oil sands extraction typically contains 60 wt.% bitumen, 30 wt.% water, and 10 wt.% solids. To meet downstream process specifications, the water and solids in bitumen froth have to be removed. The objective of this study is to identify the source of the water reporting to the...

Fall 2020
Ultrasound imaging has great potential in intraoral diagnosis, due to its portability, low cost, and low safety risks. A couplant is normally placed between transducers and tissues for better ultrasound image quality. If applied intraorally, the couplants should possess good stability in water,...

Dual Neural Extended Kalman Filtering Approach for Multirate Sensor Data Fusion with Industrial Applications
DownloadFall 2020
The Kalman filter algorithm and its variants have been widely applied to the multisensor data fusion problems to provide joint state estimation, which is more accurate than estimations from individual sensors. The performance of the Kalman filter based fusion relies on the accuracy of the models...
