This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Lipid Modified Polymers for Transfection of Human CRL Fibroblasts, and for siRNA Mediated MDR Reversal in Melanoma Cancer Therapy
DownloadFall 2010
Gene delivery for therapeutic purposes is quickly emerging as the best potential treatment option for inherited genetic diseases and cancer. Viral gene carriers have been the choice for this purpose due to their high efficiency, but harmful immunogenic and oncogenic host reactions have limited...

Longitudinal Diffusion-Weighted Imaging and T2 Relaxometry of the Hippocampus in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy
DownloadFall 2022
Hippocampal sclerosis (HS) is an important predictor of surgical outcome in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). High-resolution (1 mm isotropic) diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) of the hippocampus in TLE patients has shown patterns of hippocampal subfield diffusion abnormalities which were consistent...

Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain in Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and Advances in Measuring Cortical Microstructure
DownloadFall 2020
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) encompasses a large spectrum of physical, cognitive and behavioral deficits resulting from prenatal alcohol exposure. Studies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have shown structural and functional brain alterations in children and adolescents with...
-
Spring 2022
Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) has become an area of intense interest in brain imaging due to its ability to quantify tissue magnetic susceptibility. QSM deploys a gradient echo sequence to produce phase images that are sensitive to susceptibility differences, which can then be...

Measurement and Correction for the Magnetic Susceptibility Effects of Fat in Venous Oximetry: Application in the Quantification of Muscle Oxygen Consumption (VO2) with Plantar Flexion Exercise
DownloadSpring 2018
Measuring venous oxygen saturation (SvO2) provides direct assessment of the upstream muscle or organ's ability to extract and metabolize oxygen. Previously, measurement of venous oxygen saturation has been performed in most studies by intravenous catheterization. This approach has the advantage...

Measuring Dynamic Changes in Lung Water Density and Volume Following Supine Body Positioning Using Free-Breathing UTE MRI
DownloadSpring 2024
An excess of extravascular lung water (EVLW) is known as pulmonary edema, and is associated with dyspnea and poor exercise capacity, heart complications, heart failure, and can be a predictor of poor health outcomes. Recent developments in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequencing and hardware...

Fall 2016
This thesis discusses the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying neuromotor impairments in people with spastic cerebral palsy (CP). Ninety percent of people with CP have spastic CP and 60% have bilateral motor impairments. The first two chapters introduce CP and review the mechanisms known to...

Mechanistic studies on the uptake and intracellular trafficking of DNA complexes in primary cells using lipid-modified cationic polymers as non-viral gene carrier
DownloadFall 2012
This thesis work is aimed at addressing some of the fundamental questions surrounding the intracellular fate of plasmid DNA in clinically-relevant primary cells, when delivered with lipid-modi!ed cationic polymers as gene carriers. We developed an optimized procedure for the transfection of...
