This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

A Preliminary Study on Pyrolysis and Gasification of Asphaltenes and Coal-Asphaltenes Slurry in Entrained Flow Reactor
DownloadFall 2012
The aim of this work is to study pyrolysis of coal-asphaltenes slurry in an atmospheric entrained flow reactor. Athabasca asphaltenes and Genesee coal, both from Alberta in Canada, were selected as the feedstock. Char characteristics and the structure of asphaltenes and slurry chars including...

Fall 2016
Athabasca oil sands contain 8 to 14% bitumen and are recovered using surface mining or steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD). During primary upgrading of bitumen, the vacuum residuum from the distillation column is sent to the solvent de-asphalting unit where a paraffinic solvent is used to...

Fall 2012
Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) is a process in which coal is converted to syngas in-situ. UCG has gained popularity recently as it could be used to extract energy of deep-lying coal seams, and it reduces the footprints attributed to the gasification process. In this study, two models have...

Spring 2012
The effect of blending woody biomass material with fluid coke and coal on the co-pyrolysis process was investigated in an entrained flow gasifier. The SEM results showed a particle size decrease and shape change from needle to spherical as the temperature was increased. Agglomeration between...

Experimental and numerical verifications of new methods to predict gasification kinetics of char from MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) components using the TGA
DownloadFall 2021
Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA) is a standard state-of-the-art instrument used for investigating char gasification kinetics. However, one major flaw of the TGA is the build-up of a stagnant gas region between the empty space of the crucible mouth and the char sample layer which leads to poor...

Fall 2009
Hydrogen can be produced from biomass; this hydrogen is called biohydrogen. Biohydrogen produced in Western Canada can partially contribute to meeting the demand for hydrogen needed for bitumen upgrading. Gasification and pyrolysis are two promising pathways for producing biohydrogen in a...

Spring 2015
This work presents the numerical study of chemically reacting char particles in dense particulate media applied to fixed and fluidized beds. Our main goal was to approximate 3D fixed bed particles into 2D axisymmetric geometry using a representative element, which is found in Chapter 1. Dry air...
-
Fall 2017
This work focuses on validation of a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS Fluent 16.2 applied to multi-phase modeling of fluidized beds. A two-phase Eulerian-Eulerian based model is used to numerically reproduce experiments carried out by Taghipour, F. et al (Chem. Eng....

Pyrolysis of asphaltenes in an atmospheric entrained flow reactor: A study on gasification reactivity and properties of chars
DownloadFall 2014
Solvent deasphalting, followed by asphaltenes gasification, has been recommended as a favorable alternative to coker based upgrading processes. However, very limited work has been carried out on pyrolysis and gasification of asphaltenes, at entrained flow conditions. The present work aims at...
