This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2014
Infection with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) leads to the rapid and complete loss of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and mitochondrial messenger RNA (mt-mRNA), effectively eliminating gene expression within mitochondria. Previous work determined that a unique 3’ co-terminal transcript arising...

Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Induction of Apoptosis in Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Cholangiocarcinoma Cell Lines by Thymoquinone
DownloadSpring 2015
Thymoquinone, the plant-based bioactive constituent derived from the volatile oil of Nigella sativa, has been shown to possess considerable anti-neoplastic activity. The present study aimed to investigate the anti-tumour property of TQ against hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) and...

Mixed Abrasive Slurries of Ceria and Silica Nanoparticles formed by Electrostatic Attraction for Shallow Trench Isolation Chemical Mechanical Polishing
DownloadFall 2019
Device isolation is achieved using shallow trench isolation (STI) which requires chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) of the excess and unwanted oxide layer and stopping on the underlying silicon nitride layer. The increasing stringent requirement of the STI CMP performance is the driving...

Mixed Low-bit Quantization for Model Compression with Layer Importance and Gradient Estimations
DownloadSpring 2022
Deep neural networks (DNNs) have been widely used in the modern world in recent years. However, due to the substantial memory consumption and high computational power use of DNNs, deploying them on devices with limited resources is challenging. Model compression methods can provide us with a...

MIXED METAL OXIDE AND MIXED METAL OXIDE SUPPORTED -ION EXCHANGED ZEOLITE SORBENTS FOR HOT GAS DESULFURIZATION
DownloadFall 2012
This study describes the evaluation of the mixed metal non-supported and supported ion exchanged sorbents for hot gas desulfurization capable of withstanding a wide temperature range and multiple sulfidation-regeneration cycles. Copper-cobalt, copper-cerium mixed metal oxide and mixed metal oxide...
