This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Design and Fabrication of Fractal Photoconductive Terahertz Emitters and Antenna Coupled Tunnel Diode Terahertz Detectors
DownloadFall 2012
Improved terahertz (THz) photoconductive antennas that are able to both emit higher THz radiation power and detect lower THz radiation signal levels than the traditional THz photoconductive antennas are presented. Also, different classes of fractals are investigated to realize whether the...

Fall 2023
This thesis introduces and investigates new class of metal insulator tunneling transistor (MITT) devices. MITT devices with sub 5nm features, having a geometry that represents a realistic implementation, are studied using a simulation model developed for this thesis. The effect of changing the...
-
Fall 2020
Smart windows, having electrically-controlled transmission and zero-energy consumption when maintaining a colored or colorless state, increase the energy efficiency of buildings because they offer the potential to greatly reduce the energy cost of lighting, heating and cooling. Currently, the...
-
Fall 2013
This thesis focuses on the development of integrated silicon-based nanoplasmonic waveguides and devices for use in all-optical plasmonic circuitry. To this end, metal-insulator-semiconductor-insulator-metal (MISIM) and metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) hybrid nanoplasmonic waveguides were...
-
Fall 2009
This thesis focuses on the study of the electromagnetic properties of active spinplasmonic artificial materials. Artificial materials are composites having a macroscopic electromagnetic response that arises due to electromagnetic and electronic interactions between subwavelength sized elements....
-
Spring 2014
This thesis presents the realization and characterization of passive and active photonic and nanoplasmonic waveguides for applications in all-optical circuitry. The key results focus on generating visible light in nanoscale silicon waveguides through nonlinear interactions and demonstrating...
