IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Bacterial taxonomy is an integral part of all disciplines within the field of microbiology, as it allows researchers to communicate results efficiently, streamlining global collaboration. The ultimate goal of bacterial taxonomy is to create groups of organisms based not only on shared phenotypic...

The Arctic Ocean sea ice is shifting from a system dominated by thick perennial ice (multiyear ice –MYI) to one dominated by thinner, seasonal ice (first year ice – FYI). The effects of this shift on the bacterial constituents of the Arctic sea ice have been grossly under studied, although it is...

Bacterial stimulation of lipid vesicle production in green microalga Dunaliella tertiolecta
DownloadFall 2019
Algae and bacteria form complex interactions through the exchange of bioactive molecules and nutrients. A wide range of phenotypes, and often their very survival, are influenced by these chemically mediated relationships, shaping the ecology and diversity of marine communities. Here we sought to...

Bare-bones Paleontology: An Examination of the Systematic Methods Used in Vertebrate Paleontology and their Congruence with Avian Ichnotaxonomy
DownloadSpring 2016
Data used in the systematic paleontology of extinct vertebrates is limited to what can be collected from detailed comparisons of preserved anatomy. This restricts vertebrate paleontologists to those characters preserved on osteological specimens. Furthermore, parataxonomies such as ichnotaxonomy...

Behaviour of Helianthus annuus L.: an ethogram for sunflower, and the effect of potential competitors on soil nutrient patch use
DownloadFall 2019
Individual organisms mediate their relationship with their environment through behaviour, which can have consequences at higher levels of biological organization such as populations and communities. Plants express diverse behaviours in response to their environments, but many aspects of behaviour...

Dispersal is one of the most important life-history events facing an individual, but how and why individuals arrive at the decision to leave home is largely unknown. This decision has immediate and lifelong fitness consequences. Therefore, understanding how individuals make dispersal decisions is...
