Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

A NEW APPROACH TO MODEL FRICTION LOSSES IN THE WATER-ASSISTED PIPELINE TRANSPORTATION OF HEAVY OIL AND BITUMEN
DownloadSpring 2016
Water lubricated pipe flow technology is an economic alternative for the long distance transportation of viscous oils like heavy oil and bitumen. The lubricated flow regime involves an oil-rich core surrounded by a turbulent water annulus. Energy consumption associated with this type of pipeline...

Fall 2014
In today’s vehicle applications, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) ammonia dosing is completed using complex control algorithms that need to be parameterized for the individual catalytic converter technology. The parameterization of these control strategies is not always completed during the...

Spring 2013
Global kinetic model for a Pt-Pd diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) is proposed and validated. Experimental data was obtained using different concentrations of the artificial gas mixtures which were passed over a bimetallic catalyst. Previous works of Voltz [1], Pandya [2], Sola [3] and many others...

Spring 2016
Hosseininejad, Seyed Shaham Aldin
To overcome the challenges of low recovery of fine particles in flotation processes, designing a cavitating device that can enhance the recovery has been a major topic of study. In the design of a cavitating device, the bubble/bubble interactions, bubble response to the change of local pressure,...

Characterization of natural zeolite membranes for H2/CO2 separations by single gas permeation
DownloadFall 2011
Hoseinzadeh Hejazi, Sayed Alireza
Membrane-based processes have the potential to overcome the limitations of conventional hydrogen separation techniques such as high energy consumption and environmental concerns. Natural zeolite membranes have recently been shown to demonstrate apparent molecular sieving of H2 from H2/CO2...

Fall 2017
High Chromium Cast Irons (HCCIs) are widely used in mineral processing, slurry pumping and manufacturing processes, where high resistance to erosion and synergetic erosion-corrosion is required. The excellent performance of HCCIs results from their microstructure, which consists of hard carbides...

Computer simulation and experimental characterization of a tubular micro- solid oxide fuel cell
DownloadSpring 2010
This work is focused on a state-of-the-art tubular micro-solid oxide fuel cell (TμSOFC), ~3 millimeters in diameter and ~300 microns thick, with Ni/YSZ and LSM/YSZ composite electrodes and a YSZ electrolyte. A 2D axi-symmetric, multi-scale CFD model is developed which includes the fluid flow,...

Fall 2013
Time consuming offline laboratory analysis and high cost hardware measurement techniques render difficulties in obtaining the important quality variables in real time application. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is widely used as a process analytical tool (PAT) in chemical processes, providing...

Developing a Predictive Model of Near-Neutral pH Stress Corrosion Cracking of Underground Pipelines
DownloadSpring 2014
Near neutral pH Stress Corrosion Cracking (NNpHSCC) on underground oil and gas pipelines is an issue facing industry today. Determining where NNpHSCC is likely to occur and grow is an important aspect to developing an Integrity Management Program. This work focused on developing a predictive...

Fall 2009
The present work deals with the development of a direct simulation strategy for solving the motion of spherical particles in non-Newtonian liquids. The purely viscous (non-elastic) non-Newtonian liquids are described by Bingham and thixotropy models. Validation of the strategy is performed for...
