Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Canada has the largest known reserve of oil in the world in the form of oil sands: an estimated 1.7 to 2.5 trillion barrels of oil are deposited in combination of the sand, water and clay. The presented research is devoted to bubble-solid surface interaction, which is one of the critical areas...

Many tailings treatment technologies rely on the use of water-soluble polyacrylamides (PAM) to flocculate fine solids. However, PAM-induced flocs are often loosely-structured and retain significant volume of water due to the hydrophilicity of PAM and fine clays in oil sands fine tailings....

Study on Adsorption of Inorganic-organic Hybrid Polymers and Flocculation of Oil Sands Tailings
DownloadSpring 2013
Two inorganic-organic hybrid polymers, Al(OH)3-polyacrylamide (Al-PAM) and Fe(OH)3-polyacrylamide (Fe-PAM) were synthesized and used in flocculating model tailings (5 wt% kaolin suspensions) and laboratory extraction tailings. For comparison, a commercial anionic flocculant, partially hydrolyzed...

Synthesis and Characterization of Amylopectin-grafted Polyacrylamide (AP-g-PAM) Flocculants for Dewatering of Oil Sands Mature Fine Tailings (MFT)
DownloadSpring 2018
Oil sand mining continues increasing in Alberta and bitumen production from surface mining is predicted to reach 257,600 m3/day by 2026 (a 41.3% increase compared to 2016), generating a large amount of tailings that need to be stored in tailing ponds. The challenging part of tailing management is...

Techno-economic assessment of solvent-based bitumen extraction technologies including in-situ electromagnetic heating
DownloadFall 2021
The oil sands are a vast fossil fuel resource that supports the worldwide energy supply. The bitumen found in fossil deposits is too viscous to flow under reservoir conditions. For this reason, steam-based processes such as steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) are used to increase the reservoir...

The Development of a Technology-Explicit Bottom-Up Integrated Multi-Regional Energy Model of Canada
DownloadFall 2017
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are currently at the crux of political, environmental, technological, and cultural discussions due to climate change. A drastic reduction of GHG emissions is needed in order to mitigate potentially catastrophic climate change impacts. This thesis presents the...

The Potential of Lasers as Deterrents to Protect Birds in the Alberta Oil Sands and Other Areas of Human-Bird Conflict
DownloadFall 2015
Human population growth, urbanization, and industrialization are rapidly increasing the potential for human-wildlife conflict throughout the world. Such conflict is often mitigated by attempting to deter wildlife from the affected areas, but wildlife frequently habituate to deterrent devices,...

The Role of High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Oxide in Reducing Quartz Gangue Entrainment in Chalcopyrite Flotation by Xanthate Collectors
DownloadFall 2011
Fine particles pose two challenging problems to all mineral processors around the world today. The problems are the inefficient collection of hydrophobic particles (low recovery), and mechanical/hydraulic entrainment of hydrophilic gangue particles (low concentrate grade). Extensive research has...

Fall 2017
Legacy propagule banks of salvaged topsoils are excellent sources of plant propagules for reclamation of mine sites. However, prior studies show that less than 50% of species found in original propagule banks actually establish. We hypothesize that the expression of this legacy propagule bank is...

The Structure and Dynamics of Fish Isotopic and Trophic Niches in Natural Lakes and Constructed Fisheries Offsets in the Alberta Oil Sands
DownloadFall 2022
Habitat offsets, where damages to natural ecosystems caused by socio-economic development projects are compensated for by the construction or restoration of other ecosystems, can contribute to biological conservation when implemented properly. But, large uncertainties remain surrounding our...
