Affordable Housing for couples with children in the City of Edmonton

  • The City of Edmonton Affordable Housing Strategy 2016-2025, states that there is an existing problem of affordable housing in the city. The document mentions that in 2011, about 12,800 couples with children (renter households) were struggling with affordable housing. The city documents and strategies do not provide any data for owner households. The objective of the study is to identify the areas or neighbourhoods in the City of Edmonton which need affordable housing for couples with children. Research also identifies the area best suitable for affordable housing for couples with children in the city. GIS was used to accomplish the study in which a choropleth map is presented by calculating Z score highlighting the areas which are in critical need of affordable housing and where affordable housing should be built. A suitability map is used to demonstrate the areas where affordable housing can be built depending on various variables. The research reveals that there are very few neighbourhoods where both the factors – the requirement for affordable housing and the availability of land are present, at the same place. This study will contribute to the city and society by identifying the areas where affordable housing should be built for couples with children and will help the City in framing policies about the need and availability of land for affordable housing.
