  • Trauma, intergenerational trauma, historical trauma has started gaining more popularity
amongst professionals in the medical, psychological and educational fields. More professionals
are starting to realize that our current practices need to be modernized and updated. In particular,
amongst professionals working in an Indigenous context, trauma-informed care and practice is
becoming increasingly popular. In the educational field, educators have known that our current
practice is not adequately meeting the needs of our students. This paper provides a definition of
trauma and intergenerational trauma. In addition to a definition, reasons as to why it is vital for
educators to become trauma-informed and how we can continue to build relationships. As a
proposed solution to becoming trauma-informed, culturally responsive schools are discussed.
