SSHRC Awarded IDG 2018: This exploratory research focuses on the connection between board membership and art philanthropy in the performing arts (i.e. theatre, symphony, ballet, opera). Art patronage, from the Renaissance, through nation-state promotions of culture is recognized as having impacted artistic activity in those times. Currently, as state budgets for the arts reduce, corporations have become more significant funders in the art world. We know little about how ubiquitous and pervasive is the corporate impact in the field of arts and the core mechanisms through which their influence works. This preliminary study will lay the groundwork for answering the question: who governs performing arts organizations in Canada? In order to answer this question, data will be collected through non‑reactive research and two surveys. The first survey will be answered by arts managers and will provide information about the members of the boards. The second survey will be answered by board members and will account for their role and behaviours as members of the board. We will begin with a pilot study in Alberta. This study will provide us a preliminary test of our assumptions and research instruments, and will be used to construct the nation‑wide survey. The national survey will follow the procedures used for the pilot study in a larger scale research. Third, we will collect information about sources and amounts of revenue for each organization participating in the study. Information from these datasets will then be combined and used to analyze the connections and overlaps among patrons and board members in the performing arts.
