This is a review of the volume China in a Polycentric World: Essays in Chinese Comparative Literature, edited by Yingjin Zhang. The essays grew out of one of the conferences of the Association of Chinese and Comparative Literature (ACCL) from the late 1990s. Although the essays are on widely different topics, Zhang attempts to bring them all together in a cohesive framework that foregrounds and problematizes the comparative treatment of China and the West. The result of this overarching framework is somewhat uneven but nevertheless laudable. Nevertheless, the book contains many interesting and astute essays when they are considered on their own.
