SSHRC IDG awarded 2020: This IDG project probes how contemporary Italian theatre responds to the Mediterranean migration crisis and its political exploitation, challenges the simplistic, populist binary of us/other, and enables migrants to enter the public sphere as worthy interlocutors and political subjects. This project will conduct the research through the following methods: library and archival research to locate critical literature about migration, as well as plays and documentation about theatre productions, interviews with playwrights, dramaturges, and directors to probe their aesthetics and politics, and attendance to topical theatre productions as they become available.
