SSHRC IG awarded 2021: A team of settler and Indigenous scholars examines pioneer museums in 3 key sites (the John Walter Museum in Edmonton, the Camrose and District Centennial Museum in Camrose, and the Wadey Centre in Blackfalds) and asks how are disruptions of dominant pioneer narratives located, interrogated, and highlighted to challenge representations of the pioneer in Alberta, and how can this process encourage diverse communities to grapple with the enduring legacy of settler colonialism? Careful archival research, close visual analysis of material collections, and arts-based workshops with the museum community will produce findings that enhance ongoing efforts to contest the colonial structure of museums, extending beyond large museums to consider the specificities of the small pioneer museums common not only in Alberta, but in other parts of Canada, the United States, and Australia.
