According to Food Banks Canada, over 4 million Canadians are food insecure. But what does food insecurity actually mean, and how does it impact our community? Food insecurity is a complex web of social challenges that goes beyond income level. Education, ability, location and community are just some of the essential components of this complex issue that is often oversimplified. Libraries can find themselves in the challenging role of filling the gap between all of these aspects and connecting patrons with information and resources. In order to do this, it is essential to know what food insecurity is and what those that are impacted by it require. There are often many resources that a person can turn to when facing food-related challenges, but there is no one-size fits all solution. Understanding the types of resources and what situation they can best applied in can create the greatest impact for those that need help. This presentation will identify those resources as well as examine the impacts, causes and symptoms of food insecurity.
