This is a review of Margaret Hillenbrand's pathbreaking comparative study of contemporary Japanese and Taiwanese fiction. It examines the postwar literary scenes as part of a larger phenomenon, a sort of Neo-Colonial framework she calls Pax Americana, under the hegemonic umbrella of the United States. The book covers the work of a dozen contemporary writers, six from Japan and six from Taiwan. This approach to the intraregional episteme of East Asia is the first of its kind and has set the tone for future books.
