This background paper was prepared in conjunction with the e-Science working group for the Association of Research Libraries in 2006 and was referenced in the working group's final report, Agenda for Developing E-Science in Research Libraries (http://www.arl.org/storage/documents/publications/escience-report-final-2007.pdf). Some of its content also ended up in To Stand the Test of Time: Long-Term Stewardship of Digital Data Sets in Science and Engineering (http://www.arl.org/storage/documents/publications/digital-data-report-2006.pdf). The paper describes the importance of applying a lifecycle management approach to managing research data.
