Historically, the Spruce tree (Picea) has been used by Aboriginal peoples, such as the Dene, and traditional healers in the northern hemisphere, as a medicinal remedy to a multitude of ailments. What is it about this plant that makes it so versatile in medical practice? What organic chemicals are present in Spruce that account for its healing properties? How were these chemicals extracted and used? This study investigates the traditional and Aboriginal uses of Spruce for analgesic, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, secretolitic and expectorant, and anti-cancer and anti-oxidant purposes.
