Interacting with Choice Architecture over Time: Cognitive Dynamics and their Impact on Consumers' Downstream Behavior

  • Author(s) / Creator(s)
  • SSHRC IG awarded 2024: This program of research will provide important new insights into the cognitive dynamics associated with the interplay between environments, actions, and thoughts that govern consumer behavior. We focus on the impact of the structural properties of a decision environment -- or "choice architecture (CA) -- on consumers' choices. Prior research has examined various aspects of the psychology of decision making in general, and the ways in which CA may influence behavior more specifically. Although we currently have a reasonably advanced understanding of how the decision environment can impact choices in the moment (i.e., the immediate effects of CA), we know virtually nothing about how a consumer's interaction with a particular CA might affect their subsequent choices. The overarching goal of this research program is to illuminate the dynamic interplay between the structural properties of decision environments, how consumers engage with these environments, and the associated cognitive processes, and -- critically -- how this interplay governs downstream behavior. Achieving this goal will significantly advance our understanding of the psychological forces that impact people's consumption choices over time.
