Spatial justice in urban forest tree enhancement in Edmonton: Linkages to perceived opportunities for outdoor recreation

  • Author(s) / Creator(s)
  • SSHRC PEG awarded 2024: Our partnership goal is to support 'The City of Edmonton's' efforts to facilitate equitable opportunities for outdoor recreation, through tree planting efforts in 'Greener As We Grow'. We intend to do this by complementing the green infrastructure mapping tool with qualitative insights that facilitate equitable opportunities for BPoC groups living in poverty. Our study advances knowledge in this area through a spatial justice lens. This lens will help us focus on how opportunities for outdoor recreation are perceived to be linked to fairness in the distribution of trees, and related management (e.g., stewardship) and socio-cultural considerations (e.g., meaningful relationships). The target populations for this inquiry will include BPoC groups (e.g., visible minority: residents, refugees, recent immigrants) in Edmonton, living in poverty. Our research design has been co-created by the research team and 'The City of Edmonton' staff. This design will entail participatory mapping and focus group engagements with the highlighted population (N=100). Participants will be recruited through organizations in Edmonton that work with our target population (e.g., Action for Healthy Communities (AHC), Edmonton Social Planning Council, and Center for Race and Culture). Results from participatory mapping and focus groups will be thematically analyzed. "The City of Edmonton" staff will provide support during data collection, analysis, and knowledge mobiliz socio-cultural considerations (e.g., meaningful relationships).
