This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Utilization Based Technology Assessment and Evaluation of Cognitive Assessments for Canadian Armed Forces Members with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
DownloadSpring 2021
Canadian Armed Forces service members (CAF-SMs) have an increased risk of sustaining mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI; Garber, Rusu, & Zamorski, 2014). MTBI can result in reduced cognitive functioning which may lead to barriers to participation in everyday occupations of CAF-SMs. Military...

The exposure of DNA to UV radiation can lead to deletions, strand breaks or base modifications such as the formation of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs), [6-4] pyrimidine-pyrimidinones, and photohydrates, which may then lead to skin cancer. Different methods have been developed for the...

Fall 2021
Poxviruses encode many genes that are orthologs of cellular genes. These orthologs serve many functions, but those that are of most interest are ones that have evolved further and now serve an immune-evasion function. Such genes were likely first acquired by poxviruses through some form of...

Validation and Pattern Discovery in the Canadian Community Health Survey - Mental Health (CCHS-MH) Support Utilization
DownloadSpring 2021
Mental illness is one of the most pressing medical challenges facing society. Although identifying gaps in mental-health support utilization is important for public health, this topic has not been widely explored in the literature. The latest Canadian Community Health Survey - Mental Health...

Variation in Nimodipine Exposure and its Effect on Outcomes in Patients with Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
DownloadSpring 2021
Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH) is a life-threatening neurological emergency caused by a ruptured brain aneurysm leading to extravasation of blood into the subarachnoid space. SAH accounts for 5-10% of all strokes, affecting relatively younger age compared to ischemic strokes, leading to...

Fall 2021
In this thesis, I developed the ideas of applying the variational method in geometric mechanics to the porous media described as solid elastic materials with embedded ideal (incompressible) fluid, also known as Eulerian fluid. The work includes four chapters and a conclusion. In the Introduction,...

Variations in Size and Optical Properties of Dissolved Organic Matter During Mixing at Large River Confluences: Implications for Source Discrimination in the Boreal Zone
DownloadSpring 2021
The functionality of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in natural waters depends on its size and composition. Identifying the sources and associated properties of DOM is vital to understand its effects on downstream ecosystems. River mixing has great potential to alter DOM quality, but its role in...

Spring 2021
Post-fire rangeland management is typically a period of rest on the Great Plains of North America, but recent research has questioned if long periods of rest are necessary. This study was designed to test different intervals of post-fire rest from defoliation during the first growing season after...
